USM Gulf Coast hosts African American Genealogy workshop | Events
The University of Mississippi Gulf Coast Campus in Long Beach hosted an African American Genealogy workshop on Saturday in honor of Black History month. Participants got tips on what resources can help them gather information on ancestors.
Officials said the seminar included specific information on how to learn more about free people of color and slaves during the Pre-Civil War Era.
"They gave us a list of resources that I wasn't really familiar with for African American genealogy and that's why I came. Because there are specific sites that are not broadly known," participant Sheila Wood said.
The event was co-sponsored by the Historical Society of Gulfport. The newly formed group meets the second Thursday of every month at the downtown fire station at 6 p.m.
